The Evolutionary Function of Dreams: From Symbolic Cognition to Biological Encoding

This paper proposes Epic Cognition Theory (ECT), a transdisciplinary framework that reframes biological evolution as a process of "Symbolic Adaptation" driven by the dreaming mind. Moving beyond the paradigm of passive natural selection, ECT identifies a six-tiered hierarchy of reality perception (D-0 to D-5) through which environmental stress is transformed into genetic and epigenetic structural changes. While autism is reframed as the foundational evolutionary infrastructure of hyper-focused symbolic processing, the schizoid mechanism is defined as the active cognitive metamorphosis. We argue that major evolutionary transitions—such as bipedalism or specialized physiological adaptations—are first simulated and rehearsed within dreams before manifesting somatically. By integrating modern neuroscience, biophysics, and transgenerational epigenetics, ECT demonstrates that symbolic metaphors function as neuro-biological repair and upgrade tools. Ultimately, this study positions art and dreams not as evolutionary accidents, but as the primary technologies of Navigated Evolution. Through this mechanism, humanity transitions from Homo Sapiens (the one who knows) to Homo Architectus (the one who designs), consciously architecting its own biological and symbolic destiny.
