Across seventeen languages from nine families, human speech converges on a nearly constant information rate of about thirty-nine bits per second: fast languages carry thin syllables, slow languages carry dense ones, and the product holds. This essay takes that finding as a point of departure and argues that it measures only the channel — the wire — and not the far larger thing language is. A word is not a container that carries meaning but a key that triggers meaning already built into the listener, and the gallery of stored patterns a key reaches into is laid down at great cost in childhood. From this the essay reframes linguistic diversity: seven thousand mutually unintelligible languages are not noise around a universal but the signature of a single constraint worked countless ways, each drifting along a wide curve of equally valid solutions. A tour of grammatical architectures — Latin's linear morphology, the Semitic root-and-pattern algebra, Greek's operators of abstraction, Pāṇini's algorithmic Sanskrit — shows different branches of mathematics made native by accident of grammar, none ranking above the others. Writing materializes the cue in space and slips the channel; grammar spends its fixed budget on luxuries a community can afford and on obligations, like evidentiality, that it compels. The essay closes on the large language model: the first system to speak the human code fluently while exempt from every pressure — a channel, a body, a community, a finitude — that pressed the code into its shape.
