Purpose – This study aims to examine how community-based education initiatives can increase awareness of Islamic family law among the Yasin Nurul Hidayah congregation in Kediri. In the contemporary context, globalisation and modernisation have weakened traditional family structures. This study seeks to address issues of gender role imbalance, misunderstandings of rights and obligations, and authoritarian relationship patterns within households that often hinder the realisation of harmonious families. Methods – Using a Community-Based Research (CBR) approach, this study involved the congregation as active partners in every stage of the activity. A series of interventions in the form of seminars, participatory workshops, and personal legal consultations was designed together with religious scholars and local leaders to suit socio-cultural needs. Findings – The results of the study show that participants not only gained an increased understanding of the law, but also the ability to apply the principles of Islamic family law in their daily lives. The seminar provided a normative understanding of marriage law, while the case study-based workshop encouraged critical reflection on financial responsibility and communication between spouses. Personal consultations resulted in practical solutions to issues of child care and domestic conflict. The integration of local cultural values into every activity strengthens the program’s legitimacy and fosters a sense of collective ownership. Overall, the participatory approach has proven effective in transforming individual awareness while shaping a more equitable, cooperative, and mutually respectful collective attitude within family life. Implications – These findings enrich the discourse on legal empowerment by emphasising the importance of participatory and contextual strategies in raising Islamic family legal awareness. This study emphasises that sustainable family harmony cannot rely solely on normative regulations. Still, it requires a dialogical, community-based legal education model that is capable of bridging Sharia law with contemporary social realities. Originality - By placing Islamic legal education at the intersection of theological integrity and cultural adaptability, this study shows that a community-based approach can be an innovative path to strengthening family resilience while promoting social transformation.
