In the context of rapidly changing trends in the global economy and accelerating integration processes with the BRICS countries, the development of innovative economies in individual regions of the Russian Federation is acquiring priority importance. One of the main and most important tools for the development of regional economies is supporting the “third mission” of universities through the development of entrepreneurship in the innovation sphere. The most critical mechanism for creating a favorable scientific and academic climate is the intensification of the creation of innovation belts and the formation of innovative enterprises based on higher educational and scientific institutions. The article presents the results of a study of ways to commercialize innovations in various fields of activity. An analysis of the ranking of the best universities in Russia according to RAEX and the number of innovative enterprises formed on their basis was carried out. It was concluded that it is necessary to intensify the processes of commercialization of innovative technologies from the university environment to the industrial sector, and a number of priority tasks were identified in order to transfer knowledge generated in the academic environment. Employees of scientific, educational and industrial institutions can use the presented results in order to select the optimal option for cooperation for the development of innovative developments.
