A two-step ozonolysis method was developed for synthesizing sclareolide from sclareol. By regulating the pH value in the first step, the two oxidation stages were effectively separated and their conditions were optimized, affording the product in 70% overall yield. This route demonstrates good atom economy and avoids the use of noble metal catalysts.
