Abstract This paper solves the inverse acoustic wave scattering problems using the direct sampling method. A new indicator function is proposed and a theoretical analysis is performed, implying that our method is effective. Because the scattered field contains noise, a modified indicator function is introduced, and the stability analysis is also implemented, which clarifies the robustness of our approach. Numerical examples are taken to illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.
