Abstract

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common yet frequentlyunder-diagnosed condition. The exact pathophysiology isunknown, however multiple factors including geneticfactors, brain iron deficiency and dysfunction ofdopaminergic system are associated with RLS. It is a clinicaldiagnosis confirmed by International Restless LegsSyndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) consensus diagnosticcriteria (2012). Several pharmacological and non -pharmacological management options are available fortreatment of RLS. Non-pharmacological managementoptions include lifestyle modifications, therapeuticexercises (aerobic training, resistance training and flexibilityexercises), physical modalities (pneumatic compression,vibration therapy, and near-infrared light) and mind bodyapproaches (yoga, cognitive behavioural therapy,acupuncture, massage, and mindfulness). Pharmacologicalmanagement of RLS include drugs from various classesincluding gabapentinoids, dopamine agonists, opioids andiron therapy. Novel treatment options like peroneal nervestimulation, botulinum toxin injection, transcranialmagnetic stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, spinal cordstimulation and deep brain stimulation are still inexperimental phase.Keywords: Deep Brain Stimulation; Vagus NerveStimulation; Gabapentin; Anemia, Iron-Deficiency;Acupuncture
