Key Points

  • The aim is to investigate the relationship between smoking, opioid requirements, and pain intensity in the postoperative period.
  • Conducted a meta-analysis of non-randomized studies
  • Compared opioid requirements and pain scores between smokers and nonsmokers during early postoperative period
  • Evaluated postoperative pain management strategies considering smoking status
  • Patients who smoke have significantly higher postoperative opioid requirements
  • Smokers report higher pain intensity scores than nonsmokers
  • Findings indicate a need for tailored pain management strategies for smokers

Abstract

Despite low-quality evidence due to non-randomized study designs, this meta-analysis demonstrates that patients who smoke have significantly higher postoperative opioid requirements and pain scores than nonsmokers. These findings highlight the need to consider smoking status when developing postoperative pain management strategies. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this relationship and optimize pain control in smokers.
