Key Points

  • The research aims to analyze the differences in hippocampal volume between unipolar and bipolar depression.
  • Conducted a meta-analysis of existing MRI studies
  • Compared hippocampal volume in unipolar versus bipolar patients
  • Assessed the correlation between depression severity and volume reduction
  • Patients with unipolar depression showed a significant reduction in hippocampal volume.
  • Bipolar patients did not show a similar reduction.
  • Suggests different biological impacts of unipolar and bipolar depression on brain structure.

Abstract

Hippocampal volume is reduced in patients with unipolar depression, maybe as a consequence of repeated periods of major depressive disorder. Bipolar patients did not seem to show a reduction in hippocampal volume, but this has been much less investigated.
