In Indonesia, there are ongoing concerns about female youth participating in risky sexual and reproductive practices. Understanding the consistent determinants over time is critical for developing effective interventions. The purpose of this study was to identify and assess characteristics related with risky sexual and reproductive behaviors among young women aged 15 to 24, using data from the Indonesia Demographic and Health Surveys (IDHS) in 2012 and 2017. A secondary analysis of weighted IDHS datasets was carried out, with multivariate logistic regression employed to investigate sociodemographic and behavioral correlates of premarital sexual intercourse among never-married young women. The findings from both years showed a consistent pattern: age, wealth status, and smoking behavior were all significantly associated with risky sexual activity. In 2012, the biggest predictor was older age, followed by high socioeconomic position and smoking. In 2017, wealth remained a strong predictor, while smoking also had a significant link. These findings highlight the importance of focused sexual and reproductive health education, particularly among older, working, and rural adolescents. Interventions should also include the unique needs of middle-income youth. Expanding youth-friendly services and providing fair access to information are critical for promoting educated and responsible sexual behaviour.
