Reference management software (RMS) has become widespread in global academia, Nigerian universities such as Kaduna State University (KASU) encounter distinctive implementation barriers. These challenges stem from infrastructural limitations, varying digital literacy levels, and institutional support gaps. This study examines the adoption patterns, utilization trends, and perceived efficacy of RMS among 310 academic staff at KASU. The study employed a cross-sectional research design, a survey of 310 faculty members across all academic ranks and disciplines at KASU was conducted. Questionnaire was the instrument of data collection and it captured: demographic characteristics, RMS preferences and usage frequency, perceived benefits, and implementation challenges. Data analysis is conducted using descriptive statistics. The study revealed awareness and adoption of RMS (100%), with EndNote emerging as the predominant choice (60%), followed by Mendeley (30%) and Zotero (20%). Notable challenges included inadequate training opportunities (reported by 50% of respondents) and technical difficulties (30%), particularly regarding software installation and compatibility issues. Significant variations were observed across faculties, with science disciplines demonstrating 25% higher utilization rates than humanities. To optimize RMS integration, the following propositions are made: institutionalized training programs tailored to different academic disciplines, establishment of an RMS support unit within the university library, and strategic partnerships with software providers for campus wide licensing.
