Abstract

Orientation derives consciousness from the minimal conditions required for a system to maintain coherence in a non‑uniform world. The paper argues that orientation—defined as a boundary responding to gradients through ordered mobility—is the first functional operation of any living system. From the growth cone navigating chemical asymmetries to the mind navigating a field of possibilities, the same structural logic persists: systems preserve themselves by regulating orientation under perturbation.
