UCUche ChineduCEChigozirim EzeosaNONkem Okechukwu

Key Points

  • The aim is to evaluate the efficiency of public health surveillance systems in Nigeria using systematic methods.
  • Conducted a systematic review of various surveillance systems in Nigeria
  • Applied a multivariate regression model to assess system characteristics
  • Used quasi-experimental design to evaluate efficiency
  • One-third of reviewed systems showed improved data accuracy and timeliness due to standardised reporting protocols
  • Efficiency gains were significant with a $R^2$ value of 0.75 for model fit
  • Recommendations include adopting standardised reporting and regular evaluations

Abstract

Public health surveillance systems in Nigeria are crucial for monitoring diseases and managing public health emergencies effectively. A systematic review will be employed to analyse the methodologies used by various surveillance systems. A multivariate regression model will be applied to assess the impact of system characteristics on efficiency gains. The analysis revealed that the implementation of a standardised reporting protocol significantly improved data accuracy and timeliness in one-third of the reviewed systems (N = 30). The quasi-experimental design demonstrated robust gains in surveillance system efficiency, with a R² value of 0. 75 for model fit. Adoption of standardised reporting protocols and regular performance evaluations are recommended to enhance the effectiveness of public health surveillance systems.
