Abstract

Field research stations in South Africa are essential for environmental studies but their efficiency varies widely. A panel-data estimation method was employed to assess station performance over time, accounting for both fixed effects and random effects models to ensure robustness. The findings indicate that there is a clear trend in station efficiencies across different regions, with some stations showing efficiency gains of up to 20% after implementing certain management improvements. This study provides valuable insights into optimising resource allocation and operational strategies for environmental research stations in South Africa.
