Intraventricular antibiotics represent a potential adjunct to intravenous antibiotics in central nervous system infections, to achieve adequate drug concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid. In our single-center experience, describing 37 treatment episodes, intraventricular antibiotics mostly targeting shunt-associated central nervous system infections were generally well tolerated and associated with rapid clearance of cerebrospinal fluid. Large randomized controlled trials are needed to better assess treatment efficacy.
