This paper focuses on the optimization of traffic light timing at a signal-controlled intersection in Kysucké Nové Mesto, a small urban area in northern Slovakia. A mathematical model, based on the Poisson distribution of vehicle arrivals, was developed, and several traffic control scenarios were simulated using AIMSUN software. The analysis demonstrated the potential for a significant reduction in the vehicles waiting time in the selected intersection, thereby increasing the intersection’s capacity. The appropriate results were obtained by minimizing the sum of the mean vehicle waiting time during the green light duration.
