This talk is dedicated to Ronnie Brown—who passed away last year—and highlights some of his many original ideas. I will sketch the influence of his work and legacy, both on my own research and on categorical algebra more broadly. In particular, I will elaborate on two questions he first posed: What is a double crossed module? and What is a double central extension?
