ABSTRACT American ginseng, a perennial herbaceous plant, is recognized for its significant medicinal properties and has attracted considerable attention due to its diverse phytochemical constituents and broad spectrum of health benefits. This review consolidates current knowledge on its chemical composition and health benefits, and proposes future research directions at the same time. The chemical composition mainly included saponins, polysaccharides, organic acids, polyynes, and volatile oils. These compounds collectively underpin its health benefits, including neuroprotective effects, cardioprotective effects, metabolic regulation, immunoregulation, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, anti‐tumor, and anti‐fatigue effects. Despite advancements, challenges persist in elucidating compound synergies, standardizing cultivation/extraction protocols, and translating preclinical findings into clinical practice. Future studies should prioritize multi‐omics integration to comprehensively elucidate the bioactivity and therapeutic potential of American ginseng, and develop personalized functional food for precision medicine.
