When home becomes unfamiliar: Exploring solastalgia in the wake of the Lapindo mud disaster

The Lapindo mudfl1ow disaster in Sidoarjo has left deep scars within the affected communities, resulting in a loss of place attachment—an experience conceptualized in psychology as solastalgia. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of individuals residing near the Lapindo mudflow area, specifically in relation to their sense of loss and displacement caused by environmental changes. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study utilizes interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as its primary method of data analysis. Three participants, aged between 35 and 55 years, were involved in the study. The findings reveal five overarching themes: the experience of solastalgia, the meaning of home, the impacts of the disaster (psychological, physical, social, economic, and environmental aspects), processes of self-adjustment, and acceptance. The study highlights the enduring psychological and emotional consequences of the disaster, underscoring the importance of continued attention and support for the victims, despite the passage of many years since the event.
