ABSTRACT This study investigates an enzymatic fiber opening method using crude α‐amylase from Aspergillus tamarii MTCC 5152 as an eco‐friendly alternative to conventional lime‐sulfide unhairing in leather processing. Under optimized conditions (pH 6.5, 30°C), the sequential enzyme treatment achieved complete unhairing and efficient fiber opening in both goat skins and cow hides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform fiber bundle opening comparable to lime‐treated samples. The enzymatic process eliminated the need for liming, reliming, and deliming, leading to a 50% reduction in biological oxygen demand (BOD), 40% reduction in both chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total dissolved solids (TDS), and total elimination of sludge volumes. Importantly, the treated skins and hides had the same strength and grain characteristics as samples processed conventionally. These findings demonstrate that the proposed bioprocess not only improves environmental compliance but also offers a cost‐effective and sustainable alternative to traditional leather processing.
