BackgroundIn India, rural hospitals are perpetually burdened by an immense patient load. Maternity facilities are among the most critical sections of these hospitals, as they receive pregnant women from all surrounding villages.ObjectivesThis case report investigated the ergonomic risks and occupational challenges encountered by maternity ward nurses in a rural hospital in West Bengal, India.MethodsThe study systematically assessed work methods, postural demands, and musculoskeletal discomfort during routine childbirth assistance activity by the maternity ward nurses. A detailed method and time study, and a flow diagram were performed on the normal childbirth process. Moreover, the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) tool and modified Nordic questionnaire were performed along with the assessment of their physiological parameters.ResultsThis study found a high prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort among the nurses, and the tasks they performed in the OT of the maternity ward were often risk-prone. This investigation also highlighted a redesigned workflow.ConclusionThis report emphasises the significance of ergonomic interventions to mitigate musculoskeletal risk and improve work efficacy, as well as the holistic well-being of maternity ward nurses in rural settings.
