In April 1985, the US FDA licensed Haemophilus influenzae type b polysaccharide vaccine to protect against invasive disease caused by H influenzae type b. Shortly thereafter, both the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee of the US Public Health Service1 and the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics2 published recommendations for the routine use of this new vaccine in children at 24 months of age. More recently, updates of these recommendations have been published.3-5 From the date of vaccine licensure through July 1986, when the survey by Gururaj et al6 was conducted, more than 5 million doses of vaccine were distributed in the United States.
