Background: Primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is the common Autoimmune Inflammatory Rheumatic Disease. With its progression of course, it causes destruction of salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to the xerostomia and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Xerostomia affects the quality of life of patients. Objective: This systematic review was performed with the objective of determining efficacy of corticosteroid irrigation to improve salivary gland function in comparison with saline retrograde irrigation. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed. Literature search was conducted with online database like PUBMED, OpenMD, Science Direct, Cochrane library and Google Scholar. The literature search was conducted with the help of predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. At the end of data search, 15 trials were evaluated; of which three Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) were included for qualitative and quantitative evaluation. Results: Three studies that were included in the meta-analysis discussed the EULAR SS Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI) to gauge the improvement in symptoms related to dryness. ESSPRI’s mean standard deviation was − 1.02 −1.61, −0.43 with P = 0.0007 ( P value < 0.01). Conclusion: Based on finding of this systematic review and meta-analysis, it can be concluded that corticosteroid irrigation is effective in enhancing salivary flow and has long-term effects.
