Understanding the Role of Self-Efficacy and Self-Resilience on the Household Multidimensional Poverty Level through the Mediating Variable of Self-Determination

Self-efficacy, self-resilience, and self-determination are elements of positive psychology that can stimulate personal motivation to achieve a better life.This study examines the relationship between these elements and household poverty levels in Indonesia.This study uses raw data from the Indonesian Happiness Level Measurement Survey (SPTK 2021) conducted by BPS-Statistics Indonesia.Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a data processing and analysis technique.The research design utilizes four latent variables: self-efficacy, self-resilience, self-determination, and multidimensional poverty.Self-efficacy and self-resilience are exogenous variables, followed by self-determination and multidimensional poverty as sequential endogenous variables.Self-determination serves as a mediating variable between self-efficacy, self-resilience, and multidimensional poverty.The latent variables for multidimensional poverty consist of first-order and second-order variables.The first-order variable represents the general multidimensional poverty variable.Meanwhile, the second-order variable is a description of multidimensional poverty, specifically consisting of poverty in the dimensions of household income, housing, sanitation, education and skills, health, social life, and the political and governmental dimensions.The test results show that there is a direct positive relationship between the exogenous variables of self-efficacy and self-resilience with the mediating variable of self-determination.Then, the mediating variable of self-determination also has a direct negative relationship with the level of multidimensional poverty of the household, both in multidimensional poverty in general, and specifically.Thus, this study found that increasing self-efficacy and self-resilience can reduce the level of multidimensional poverty of the household, in all dimensions of poverty, through the mediation of self-determination.
