Key Points

  • To evaluate the long-term naturalistic outcomes, including response rates, remission rates, and quality of life, in patients with treatment-resistant depression receiving treatment as usual.
  • Prospective, long-term, multicenter naturalistic observational study design.
  • Tracked clinical response, remission status, functional impairment, and quality-of-life metrics among patients with treatment-resistant depression receiving treatment as usual (TAU).
  • Most patients with substantial treatment resistance continued to suffer from significant depressive symptomatology and functional disability despite ongoing treatment as usual.
  • Clinical response, remission rates, and quality-of-life outcomes remained poor across available standard-of-care options.

Abstract

Despite the wide range of treatment options available for depression, the response rates, remission rates, and quality-of-life results in this study show that most patients with a substantial degree of treatment resistance continue to have significant symptomatology and functional disability when receiving TAU.
