We report on a comparative study of MeV-energy multicharged ion generation efficiency from relativistically intense laser pulse interactions with small and large clusters of atomic Ar, Kr and molecular O ₂ gases. An optimal average cluster diameter of 30 nm was identified for krypton to produce ions with MeV energies at charge states of 2–5.
