Abstract We must begin an honest, wide-open, and vital conversation among us all, as a community of scholars working in the field of biblical studies and cognate areas, about how to address the severe, systemic challenges that our field/s and all the humanities and social sciences are facing now, globally and locally. We need to think together about (potentially actionable) ways to address them that lead to futures in which our academic fields, and we as scholars, will flourish. The question is then: What can we do, as a community of scholars in the field, as individual scholars, and as the SBL, to shape better futures for us and the entire field? This address identifies a variety of complementary pathways we may follow. It encourages us to discuss them and think together about additional pathways.
