In this comprehensive double-lecture session from the BrianSpace Research Experience Program (B-REP) 2026, Vincent Ledvina (University of Alaska Fairbanks) explores the "magnetic cavity" that carves out our home in space: The Magnetosphere. This session moves from the foundational physics of planetary magnetic fields to the dynamic processes of reconnection and Magnetosphere-Ionosphere (M-I) coupling that produce the stunning Aurora Borealis and impactful geomagnetic substorms. What you will learn in this video: The Global Structure: Understanding the Bow Shock, Magnetopause, and the elongated Magnetotail. The Dynamo Effect: How Earth’s magnetic field is generated in the core and how it differs from other planets in our solar system.
