Abstract

A 41-year-old asthmatic woman appeared to have a paradoxical (bronchospastic) response to isoetharine aerosol from a metered-dose inhaler. Analysis of her response to a placebo preparation consisting of the carrier solution without the bronchodilator suggests that her adverse reaction was due to one of the components of the carrier solution. This explanation should be considered in any subject demonstrating a paradoxical response to a bronchodilator from an inhaler.
