Abstract: In this editorial, Journal of Singing editor in chief Matthew Hoch contemplates the importance of indexing in academic scholarship. In addition to providing a brief overview of the history of indexing, the author draws upon his own experience as an indexer, contemplating the indexing process as well as attributes comprising quality indexes. Hoch offers thoughts on the persisting value of analog indexes despite the omnipresence of electronic ones in the current milieu. This exploratory meditation on the article’s topic serves as both a preamble and rationale for the reinstatement of the Journal of Singing ’s volume index after a two-year hiatus.
