This research aims to understand the trends in approaches to inguinal hernia repair in Ireland, focusing on the use of open vs. laparoscopic techniques.
Retrospective analysis of national cohort data
Comparison of treatment approaches based on patient age and comorbidities
Analysis of emergency versus elective repair cases
Open inguinal hernia repairs are more common than laparoscopic repairs in Ireland
Older patients and those with multiple health issues are significantly likelier to undergo open repairs
Emergency repair cases show a strong preference for open surgery
Abstract
Despite advances in laparoscopy, open IHR remain the predominant treatment approach in the ROI. Older, more co-morbid patients and those undergoing emergency repairs are far more likely to have an open IHR.
