Evaluation of Daylight Levels in an Administrative Building in Akure, Nigeria

The study focuses on the adequacy of lighting for office work in theSenate Building, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA). The three storey administrative building houses the management offices and the senate chambers of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Total enumeration of the spaces was executed. A hand held multi-meter produced by MASTECH, MS 8209, was used to assess the light level in the offices. The major factor considered in the research is the level of illumination on the work plane in the interior of the building, the area of the windows and the floor area of the offices. The data collected was analysed using tables and figures. Findings illustrate that office area with natural lighting below 500 lux amounts to 1268.40 square metres (96.92% of the total office area). Dark zones in the building are apparent during power outages. Some recommendations from the research includes remodelling sections of the building to allow for natural lighting and installation of roller shade blinds which can be easily controlled for optimum light penetration.
