Septorhinoplasty for both functional and cosmetic purposes is a widely performed operation. As with any surgical intervention, there are inherent risks which include bleeding manifesting as periorbital ecchymosis (PE). PuraBond is a novel, self-assembling, viscous biomaterial solution that transforms upon contact with biological fluids into a transparent, three-dimensional hydrogel matrix, effectively promoting localised haemostasis. This study evaluated the utility of PuraBond in reducing the degree of PE associated with septorhinoplasty. A review of 71 consecutive primary septorhinoplasty cases performed by a single senior surgeon was undertaken. The degree of PE was compared to consecutive cases when PuraBond was not available. The use of PuraBond did not demonstrate a statistically significant impact on the degree of PE following septorhinoplasty (Mean PE score for control 4.17 versus 3.97 for PuraBond group, Mann-Whitney test, p = 0.55). This study is the first to describe the use of PuraBond within the context of osteotomies in septorhinoplasty. The use of PuraBond did not improve the degree of PE associated with septorhinoplasty.
