Within qualitative research, focus groups have particular strengths for gathering the breadth and depth of participants' opinions on issues specified by the researcher. This article explores the transfer of this data collection technique into another domain by the use of virtual focus groups conducted as private e-mail discussions. The author draws on his experience of conducting virtual groups to present issues in their use and to provide recommendations for researchers considering using this approach.
