The spatial acuity of dolphin biosonar has been measured in both the horizontal and vertical planes, with a discrimination threshold of approximately 1.5°. Several studies at different laboratories have replicated this result with passive and active hearing over a 50-year period. Remarkably, dolphins do not outperform bats or humans in similar biosonar spatial acuity tests, despite radical differences in hearing capabilities and sound propagation properties in air versus water. The auditory mechanisms governing biosonar spatial acuity and the function of projector/receiver beam widths, and broadband, high-frequency hearing in biosonar are discussed.
