The 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has prompted states to enact laws that significantly restrict or ban abortion. While some states include exemptions permitting physicians to perform abortions as part of good emergency obstetric care, many of these laws are ambiguous and complicate time-sensitive clinical decision-making. This commentary on a case suggests strategies for documenting, collecting, and reporting emergency obstetric care outcomes under these new laws. This commentary also considers post-Dobbs roles of what was once national mandatory and standardized reporting on emergency obstetric care outcomes using International Classification of Diseases codes and post-Dobbs roles of maternal mortality review committees.
