  • Monitored excavation for trench during water pipe repair adjacent to Segedunum Roman Fort.
  • Assessed for archaeological features in a heavily disturbed area.
  • No archaeological features, finds, or deposits encountered during the watching brief.
  • Findings attributed to previous disturbance from road and water pipe installation.

Abstract

An emergency watching brief was carried out by Archaeological Research Services Ltd on behalf of Northumbrian Water on Buddle Street, immediately adjacent to Segedunum Roman Fort, on the 19th February 2025 to mitigate against the impact of a water pipe repair on the archaeological and historic environment. The development area is notably close to both Segedunum Roman Fort and Hadrian's Wall. No archaeological features, finds or deposits were encountered during the course of the watching brief. This was due to the trench for the pipe repair being located within an area that had already been heavily disturbed by the creation of the existing A186 road and the insertion of the water pipe. During the course of the watching brief no archaeological finds, deposits or features were identified. The absence of any archaeological resource from within the watching brief area can be attributed to the widespread disturbance previously caused by the creation of the road and insertion of the water pipe.
