Distance education is seen by many educators as one of the more innovative approaches to teaching the twenty-first century student. This article presents a broad overview of the state of distance education based on current literature. It includes a review of definitions; a nonevaluative look at several distance education programs, both national and international; a discussion of the various modes used to deliver distance education; a description of the distance education learner; and comments and conclusions.
