Maura Theory is a structural framework examining how friction distribution, participation conditions, environmental continuity, nervous system stability, and low-coercion structures shape sustainable human participation in AI-era environments. Emerging from prolonged observation across salons, architecture, gardens, digital systems, participation fatigue, and AI interaction structures, the theory proposes that many contemporary systems amplify insecurity and optimization pressure while unintentionally degrading long-term participation continuity and nervous system sustainability. The paper introduces core concepts including Structural Friction, Friction Displacement, Quiet Infrastructure, Participation Continuity, Friction Gradient, and Emergence Economy. Rather than maximizing engagement or eliminating friction entirely, Maura Theory proposes strategically reducing harmful structural friction while preserving appropriate friction gradients necessary for spontaneity, creativity, agency, unresolvedness, and sustainable emergence. The framework further proposes that future AI-era systems may require low-coercion participation structures, friction buffering, nervous system sustainability metrics, and quiet infrastructure design in order to support long-term human continuity across cognitive, infrastructure, labor, and environmental layers.
