A method of detecting eye movements during dreaming is described which consists of a direct mechanical measurement of eye movements by means of a ceramic strain gauge. The strain gauge method offers the advantages of higher sensitivity, a larger signal-to-noise ratio, and a low impedance output. These factors make possible the monitoring of eye movements for dream research with more portable, less expensive recording instruments than those required for recording by the usual electrical method. Eye movement tracings recorded simultaneously by the two methods are presented and compared.
