A facile shell-by-shell templating method (see image) has been developed for the preparation of monodispersed, polycrystalline tin oxide hollow colloids with a nanoarchitectured wall structure. The cavity size is easily tuned by using silica templates of different sizes. Functionalization of the interior space of these colloids is also demonstrated. The deposition protocol can be used to coat polycrystalline tin oxide onto other nonsilica materials.
