Purpose The management of both tacit and explicit knowledge is crucial for firms to collaborate successfully with diverse actors. Our research paper explores how open innovation (OI) and knowledge management (KM) strategies are conceptually connected in large firms. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper underscores the significance of managers adapting KM strategies in OI through the integration of diverse knowledge sharing and control approaches, as well as the consideration of implicit knowledge. It is illuminated by short case exhibits based on large firms to show its practicality. Findings The research demonstrates that the three OI archetypes of inbound, outbound and hybrid call for innovative blends of personalization and codification KM strategies in large organizations. Practical implications This research underlines the necessity for managers to redesign the KM strategy in the context of OI and to consider new dynamics between codification and personalization. Originality/value Literatures on KM strategies and OI evolve in parallel. The originality of this research is to provide new links between personalization and codification strategies of managing knowledge and the three OI archetypes.
