Abstract Observations in an Oregon nursery following the flood of December 1964 showed that 2-0 seedlings of ponderosa pine withstood three months of burial under silt without any serious damage, but 2-0 Douglas-fir began to lose vigor after eight weeks in silt. The dormant state of seedlings and cool weather are considered mainly responsible for lack of more severe losses caused by silting.
