Correspondence including many letters from Dowson to Conal O'Riordan discussing his time in Paris, how he is either waiting or asking for money from him and other friends, and mentions hanging out with and dining with French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Later letters from writer R. H. Sherard and journalist Alexander Teixeira de Mattos to O'Riordan, informed him of Dowson's declining health, subsequent passing and funeral arrangements. Ernest Christopher Dowson, was an English poet, short story writer, and translator of French authors. From a life of misery and squalor, he produced poetry on themes of love and lost childhood. The mood of unfulfilled longing which permeates his work, along with his recklessly unhealthy lifestyle, exemplifies what Yeats called the "tragic Generation". Dowson was an influence on Yeats' early work and is frequently associated with the 1890's fin de siècle or decadent period in literature. His early poetry appeared in such publications as "The Yellow Book" and "The Savoy". His short working life was divided between living in England and France. He died in London.
