Digital Physical Therapy in the Arab World: Opportunities for Smartphone-Based Rehabilitation and Challenges of Clinical Implementation

This paper explores the growing role of digital physical therapy in the Arab world, with particular emphasis on smartphone-based rehabilitation as an emerging model of accessible and patient-centered care. The study discusses how mobile technologies can support physical therapy practice through home exercise guidance, patient education, remote follow-up, adherence monitoring, and improved communication between therapists and patients. The paper highlights major opportunities offered by smartphone-based rehabilitation, including wider access to care in remote and underserved areas, reduced costs, greater convenience, and support for individuals with mobility limitations or limited access to specialized rehabilitation services. It also examines the main challenges of clinical implementation, such as limited digital literacy, inconsistent internet access, concerns about privacy and data security, difficulty in performing hands-on assessment remotely, and the need for professional guidelines and culturally appropriate digital content. The paper concludes that smartphone-based rehabilitation has strong potential to improve physical therapy delivery in the Arab world, but successful adoption requires careful clinical integration, training, and context-sensitive development.
