The Effect of the Pentagram Strategy on Developing Reflective Thinking Among Seventh-Grade Female Students

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the Pentagram Strategy on developing reflective thinking among seventh-grade female students in the Sultanate of Oman. The study responds to the growing need to enhance higher-order thinking skills and to implement modern teaching methods that promote interaction and reflection on scientific content and classroom practices. Methodology: The study adopted a quasi-experimental design with two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The sample consisted of 56 seventh-grade students, with 29 students in the experimental group and 27 students in the control group. The researchers used the Reflective Thinking Scale developed by Kember et al., which includes four main dimensions: understanding instructional materials, reflection on daily practices, critical reflection on the learning unit, and habitual action. Results: Statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the post-test scores for the dimensions of understanding instructional materials, reflection on daily practices, and critical reflection on the learning unit. However, a statistically significant difference with a large effect size was found in the habitual action dimension in favor of the experimental group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the Pentagram Strategy did not have a significant impact on most dimensions of reflective thinking, except for the habitual action dimension. This may be attributed to the nature of the activities emphasized by the strategy. The study recommends providing teachers with training on the effective implementation of the Pentagram Strategy and integrating reflective thinking activities into science curricula to foster the development of such thinking among students across different educational stages. الهدف: هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على فاعلية استخدام استراتيجية البنتاجرام في تنمية التفكير التأملي لدى طالبات الصف السابع الأساسي في سلطنة عُمان، وذلك استجابةً للحاجة المتزايدة إلى تعزيز مهارات التفكير العليا، وتفعيل أساليب تعليمية حديثة تدعم التفاعل والتأمل في المحتوى العلمي والممارسات الصفية. المنهجية: اتبعت الدراسة المنهج شبه التجريبي بتصميم المجموعتين: تجريبية وضابطة. وبلغت عينة الدراسة (56) طالبة من الصف السابع الأساسي، موزعة على مجموعة تجريبية (29 طالبة) وأخرى ضابطة (27 طالبة). وتم استخدام مقياس كيمبر ورفاقه للتفكير التأملي، والذي يتضمن أربعة محاور: فهم المواد التدريسية، التأمل في الممارسات اليومية، التأمل الناقد في الوحدة الدراسية، والعمل الاعتيادي. النتائج: أظهرت نتائج التحليل الإحصائي عدم وجود فروق دالة إحصائيًا بين المجموعتين في التطبيق البعدي لمحاور: فهم المواد التدريسية، التأمل في الممارسات اليومية، والتأمل الناقد في الوحدة الدراسية. في المقابل، وُجد فرق دال إحصائيًا في محور العمل الاعتيادي بمعامل تأثير كبير لصالح المجموعة التجريبية. الخلاصة: أوضحت النتائج أن استراتيجية البنتاجرام لم تؤثر بفعالية على معظم محاور التفكير التأملي، عدا محور العمل الاعتيادي. وقد يُعزى ذلك لطبيعة الأنشطة التي تركز عليها الاستراتيجية. وتوصي الدراسة بـتدريب المعلمين على تطبيق استراتيجية البنتاجرام بفاعلية، وتضمين أنشطة التفكير التأملي ضمن مناهج العلوم، لدعم تنمية هذا النوع من التفكير لدى الطلبة في مراحل التعليم المختلفة.
