Abstract

From 1649 to 1660 the period is known as commonwealth period in English literature. This is ruled by Oliver Cromwell. This age is full of religious thoughts and full of morality. People are like prisoner in this age. Then comes restoration age that is from 1660 to 1700.This age is full of freedom and full of immorality. Charle 2 is king and he is corrupt and immoral man. It is said that if king is corrupt then there will anarchy. So, it is true here. Here anarchy is of vices. It was reaction against morality and discipline of last age. Restoration literature 's works are full of realism, satire, wit and humor and vices. Some characters are example of false wit and stupidity. Comedy of manners are influenced by French dramatist Moliere and subject matters are narrow. With love and marriage selfishness and intrigues are attached. Although Congreve 's manners is free from bitterness and harsh criticism. He just wants to show reality. In this paper there is presentation of that age 's conditions from critical point of view and some new interpretation about play.
