In April 2017 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out archaeological trial trenching on land at York Place, 7 Quebec Street, Dereham, Norfolk (NGR 9876 1336). The trenching was undertaken as a requirement for archaeological mitigatory work, to commence with evaluation by trial trenching, as required by Norfolk Historic Environment Service, in order to identify any archaeological remains for which further mitigation may be required as the first stage of the requirements of a planning condition for a programme of archaeological work attached to the planning permission for the development (Breckland Planning Approval Ref. 3PL/2015/0575/F). The features recorded during the evaluation were largely post-medieval and modern. Trench 1 contained modern brick Wall Footing M1005, concrete Floor M1019, and modern Feature F1029. Trench 2 contained a cobbled floor surface, M1024 and Flint Wall M1009. The features post dated Layers L1013 and L1017 which contained post-medieval CBM. A possible linear feature, F1007, was recorded and it contained a sherd of medieval (11th-14th century) pottery. Dating of this feature to the medieval period is tentative. Additional medieval pottery was found during the evaluation. L1011 which overlay F1007, contained medieval (late 12th - 14th century) pottery, and Layer 1017 contained residual medieval (14th - 15th century) pottery, and a floor tile. Three sherds of unstratified late medieval (13th - 15th century) were also found during the evaluation. Additional interesting finds comprise a residual late medieval - Tudor brick fragment from modern Pit F1019, and M1024 contained millstone fragments (2076g). The site was overlain by substantial modern layers which served to level the slope of the site.
