Orkney Islands Council commissioned Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) on behalf of National Health Services Orkney (NHS Orkney) to undertake a magnetometry survey at the site of Old Scapa Road (KW15 1WY). A fluxgate gradiometer survey covering 3.7ha was conducted between the 7th and 8th October 2013 in order to identify any potential archaeological features located within the site and to inform on any mitigation strategies that may be required. The results of the survey have demonstrated the potential presence of archaeological remains in various locations. It is recommended that the anomalies picked up by the geophysical survey are subject to ground-truthing in the form of a trenched evaluation, in the areas potentially impacted on by the currently proposed route of the Kirkwall Link Road.
