A geophysical survey, comprising detailed magnetometry, was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd over 12ha on the south western edge of Calne, Wiltshire. The detailed magnetic survey was carried out using a SENSYS MAGNETO MX V3 6 channel hand pushed cart-based system. The instrument has 6 fluxgate gradiometers (FGM650) spaced 0.5m apart with readings recorded at 20Hz., which equates to a resolution of 0.5m by 0.15m The results indicate the presence of a linear group of pit-like features in the eastern part of the site; however, while their origin cannot be determined it is possible that they may have archaeological potential. Further magnetically enhanced anomalies of uncertain origin have also been located in the southern part of the site, with a zone being disturbed by ridge and furrow/lynchets. The site contains widespread land drains, agricultural anomalies including ridge and furrow, former field boundaries and modern steel pipes.
